More Than Just a Riding Lesson

At BlueWater Horse Ranch, learning begins before you ever put your foot in the stirrup.

We want our students to understand the horse—not simply learn how to sit in the saddle.

Depending on experience level and lesson goals, your lesson may include:

  • Horse safety and proper handling

  • Grooming and preparing your horse

  • Haltering and leading

  • Saddling and tack basics

  • Mounting and dismounting

  • Proper riding position and balance

  • Steering and stopping

  • Walk and introductory riding skills

  • Horse behavior and body language

  • Basic horse care and barn knowledge

This hands-on approach helps students develop a stronger foundation in horsemanship, confidence and safe riding practices.

Why Learn on a Gypsy Vanner?

With their flowing manes, abundant feathering and powerful appearance, Gypsy Vanner horses are unforgettable.

But there’s much more to these horses than their looks.

Working with our Gypsy Vanners gives students an opportunity to learn how to communicate with a horse through body position, movement, pressure and release.

Every horse has an individual personality, and learning those differences is an important part of becoming a better horse person.

Students learn to recognize signals expressed through the horse’s ears, eyes, posture and movement.

Good riding starts with good horsemanship.

Beginner Horse Riding Lessons

Never ridden before? You can start here.

You don’t need previous horse experience to begin taking lessons at BlueWater.

Beginner riders can start with the fundamentals of safely approaching, grooming, handling and leading a horse before progressing into riding skills.

Students progress according to their experience, ability and confidence.

You don’t need to own a horse.

You don’t need previous riding experience.

You just need to be ready to learn.

Horse Riding Lessons for Children

Working with horses can teach children much more than how to ride.

Because horses are large, responsive animals, students must learn to pay attention, follow instructions and understand how their actions affect the horse.

Lessons can help young riders develop:

Confidence through learning and practicing new skills.

Responsibility through understanding the daily care horses require.

Communication through learning how horses respond to body language and riding cues.

Patience through working with an animal that requires consistency and understanding.

Respect through learning appropriate boundaries and safe behavior around horses.

Parents can contact BlueWater Horse Ranch to discuss lesson availability and whether riding lessons are appropriate for their child.

Adult Horse Riding Lessons

It’s Never Too Late to Learn

Maybe you’ve wanted to ride horses your entire life.

Maybe you rode when you were younger and want to get back in the saddle.

Or maybe you’ve recently discovered an interest in horses and simply want to learn.

Our adult riding lessons can be tailored to your experience and goals, from learning basic horsemanship to developing your Western or English riding skills.

Western Riding Lessons

Western lessons focus on developing a balanced, confident rider while learning the cues used to communicate effectively with the horse.

Depending on experience level, instruction may include riding position, rein control, leg cues, steering, stopping, transitions and other foundational Western riding skills.

$65 per hour

Lessons typically last 1–2 hours.

English Riding Lessons

English riding emphasizes balance, position and communication between horse and rider.

Students can learn foundational English riding techniques while developing an independent seat and a better understanding of how rein, leg and body cues influence the horse.

$75 per hour

Lessons typically last 1–2 hours.

Meet Your Horse Before You Ride

A horse isn’t simply something you climb onto for an hour.

It’s your partner.

That’s why part of learning at BlueWater is getting to know the horse you’re working with.

Students may spend time grooming, leading, preparing and interacting with their horse before riding.

You begin learning the horse’s personality.

The horse begins learning about you.

And riding becomes part of a much larger relationship between horse and rider.

What Should I Wear?
